Having trouble managing your money?
Posted: Sunday, October 17, 2010 by Pie Man
Never enough of it. Stretch it. Find more of it. Use less of it. Maximize it. Money. With it we can build a business, build a house, launch a project. With money we feed and clothe ourselves. Money keeps our country, province, city and homes running. Money can also be our reason to become stressed out, break up relationships, give up on plans and dreams or fall into personal and professional failure. The quantity of money is not the true issue in our lives. Our attitude towards money and how we handle the money we have is the key. Do you need help with money? There's an app for that! |

Wondering how to talk to God?
Posted: Sunday, October 10, 2010 by Pie Man
So what is important when we pray? Is it the words that we use? What about the place or the time? As we examine the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:5-8, we are often surprised at the answers. God wants us to connect to Him in a growing, living relationship, and this requires us to take actions we may not have considered before. |

Wondering how to navigate through life’s twists and turns?
Posted: Sunday, October 3, 2010 by Pie Man
God sent you a text message – it's called the Bible. And in this message, He revealed His perspective to you on every aspect of your life. Though we jump at the sound of a text from a friend, we tend to ignore the message God sent us in His Word. In this message, we will be challenged to set aside our preconceived notions about the Bible and just read it. |

Struggling with relationships?
Posted: Sunday, September 26, 2010 by Pie Man
Most of us have experienced first-hand the power that our words can have when it comes to relationships. When we’re careless with our words we can do much damage. We can crush somebody’s spirit. We can step on somebody’s dream. We can fill somebody with resentment. We can make other people, even our own children, afraid.
On the other hand, when you say the right word at the right time, somebody who thought they were alone realizes they are not alone, they are loved. Somebody who was confused receives guidance and direction. Somebody who is ready to give up all of a sudden gets hope. The right words can sometimes give correction to a person who was about to make the biggest mistake of their lives. Words really do have the power of life or death.
In this message, Mark will look at the wisdom of Proverbs in regards to our relationships and how to build them up rather than tear them down. |

Looking for wisdom?
Posted: Sunday, September 19, 2010 by Pie Man
In our day we’re overwhelmed with information, not wisdom. Biblical wisdom is the ability to make right decisions. It is very practical. It is the ability to discern in my actual life, what is the God-honoring, right course to take? And being a fool in Biblical perspective, that’s not somebody who’s not educated. A fool is primarily not a problem of the mind but a problem of the will. It’s rebellion against God. Proverbs are designed to force us to have to think about them. That’s what we will learn how to do in this message. |

Fabulous Family
Posted: Sunday, August 15, 2010 by Pie Man
No one wants to be alone. It is a basic need of every human being to belong and to have an identity. The most basic place in which to belong and have an identity is within the context of a family. A family should be the place where there is the most intimacy and solidarity.
Every person is separated from God and is called an enemy of God in the Bible. Yet God hates this separation. He longs to be in a relationship with each and every person. He created the way to bridge that gap and bring everyone close to Him: faith in the work and person of Jesus. Preposterous!
All those who enter into this family enter into a deep communion with God. They are known by Him and they begin to know Him, too. As our intimacy deepens with God, our relationship with others develops into something truly family and truly fabulous. |

Superior Spirit
Posted: Sunday, August 8, 2010 by Pie Man
Wouldn’t it be great if Jesus were still here on the earth? Jesus because He would be leaving, someone else would come who would be better for us. Preposterous!
It is true. When Jesus left the Holy Spirit came. He is a Superior Spirit to anything in this world. He wants to comfort us, help us, give us strength and lead us to truth. This is something we cannot find anywhere else in this world. He is Superior!
This week we’ll learn who the Superior Spirit is and how He will change our lives, relationships and perspective. He’s preposterous yet superior! |

Lavished Love
Posted: Sunday, August 1, 2010 by Pie Man
The message of love in the Bible is preposterous. Some of this message may not seem so preposterous. For instance, husbands should love their wives and vice versa. But then the Bible teaches us to love others, even strangers. Even our enemies! Preposterous!
Throughout history people have disobeyed God, offended Him, inflicted pain on each other and are destroying the very planet God lovingly furnished for us. For us, love is conditional and based on getting a good return.
Nevertheless, God lavished His love on us. He recklessly and generously heaps piles of love on us. He has gone so far as to change us from His enemies and to His children without cost to us. Preposterous!
With that much love lavished upon us, how can it not change the way we love God and others? This week’s message will show us the depth of God’s great love for us and how we can begin to love in the same preposterous way. |

Gratuitous Grace
Posted: Sunday, July 25, 2010 by Pie Man
- We were dead in sin, separated from God and deserving of His punishment. This is recognized by everyone and religions try and try to erase this debt, change the course of lives and arrive at God.
- Issue: all of these methods of changing our situation are what we invent. They are predictable, boring, unreliable and unsatisfying. Ultimately, they leave us realizing we are back where we started.
- Grace is free, in fact it is gratuitous
- Our salvation given on this free grace of God
- Our works are based on this grace
- The works are giving grace to others
- Giving grace means daily and unselfishly serving, loving and caring for others whether or not they seem to deserve it
Ephesians 2:1-10 |

Esther
Posted: Sunday, July 18, 2010 by Pie Man
Esther’s bravery and faith in God are a testament to the trust this young woman had in the living God. She is a lesson in God’s sovereignty over His creation. He maneuvers every aspect of life to position people, governments, and situations for His plan and purpose. We may never know what God is doing, but a time might come when we realize why we have gone through certain experiences, or met certain people, or lived in certain areas, or shopped in certain stores, or taken certain trips, until the instant when everything comes together, and we look back and see that we too were put in that moment of time, just as Esther. She was put into a harem… “…for such a time as this…” she was given to a king…”…for such a time as this…” and she was strengthened and prepared to intercede for her people…”…for such a time as this…” (Esther 4:14).
Esther is truly a reminder of God’s promise, as written in Romans 8:28: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to [His] purpose.” |

Caleb
Posted: Sunday, July 11, 2010 by Pie Man
The original meaning of the name “Caleb” was “dog” in ancient Hebrew. Caleb was, in fact, like God’s “bulldog” in the Old Testament tough, persistent, eager to fight for the Lord, and sure of his victory. He was the son of Jephunneh, whose name meant “nimble” in Hebrew. Caleb provides a prophetic illustration for us of what a faithful believer should be like.
Caleb had spied out the most difficult part of the land – the area that required charging uphill in battle (which is very difficult), and fighting with huge super-soldiers (the Anakites). Yet Caleb was the one (along with Joshua) who insisted that the task was not too difficult for the Lord when others thought it was too hard. It was the other ten spies, who had visited much easier areas to conquer, who insisted that the task was impossible.
Now, at age 85, Caleb asks for perhaps the most difficult assignment in the remaining conquests of the land. Many Christians want the easy way – they want God to use them in a way that brings glory but does not require too much effort, determination, or sacrifice. Caleb was the opposite. He asked – at age 85 – for permission to conquer an area that required charging uphill again mountaintop fortresses, and fighting with soldiers much larger than him or his men. God honored Caleb’s determination and faith and gave him victory. Caleb’s name seems to be appropriate for his personality – tenacious, aggressive faith. |

Nehemiah
Posted: Sunday, July 4, 2010 by Pie Man
We can learn from the life of Nehemiah valuable lessons in restoring and maintaining a relationship with God. As the people returned to the rebuilt city, the first order of business was to make certain that they understood the Law of Moses.
Nehemiah stands as a testament to faithfulness and perseverance. He lived far away from his home, yet he never gave up hope that someday he would return to it. He spent most of his life in exile in a pagan land, yet he never wavered in his faith and trust in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He was a prayer warrior, putting everything before the Lord in prayer, interceding on behalf of his people, and he was rewarded for his diligence and perseverance. Nehemiah cared so much for his people that he never gave up the hope of their restoration, not only to their homeland, but to the God that first called their forefather, Abraham, out of the same area and made a covenant with him, one which Nehemiah believed would stand forever. |

Posted: Sunday, June 20, 2010 by Pie Man
This morning we’ll look at the great story of David and Absalom. It’s a sad story that looks at the brokenness and failure as David as a dad. God came into David’s life and turned him around. He could not undo the past but he could walk a different way after making a conscious decision to do so with God’s help.
That’s what we’ll discover this morning with Mark’s Father’s Day message. 2nd Samuel 13 |

Bigger Than My Suffering
Posted: Sunday, May 16, 2010 by Pie Man
The story of Job is an amazing story that goes so deeply into the human condition and this is what we are going to look at this weekend as we are learning together about a God who is bigger than our suffering.
A lot of people think the key question in Job is “Where is God when we suffer?” Where is God when we hurt? And that is a huge question. It is not the fundamental question that’s at stake in the book of Job. The key question on the upper stage, the key question really for the structure of the whole book comes in chapter 1 verse 9 when Satan says, “Does Job fear God for nothing?”.
Job could not see the upper stage. Job did not know that his faithfulness had meaning beyond his wildest dreams. Job did not know that something cosmic and eternal was at stake in his little life, in his little time on this stage in his deep suffering. Sitting on an ash heap, scraping boils off his skin with shards of broken, discarded pots—broke, sick, mocked, confused, abandoned, helpless, hopeless, alone. Job’s faithfulness and suffering was being used by God to vindicate God’s whole wild adventure in covenant love. Job’s honesty and perseverance have been used now for thousands of years across the continents, across the cultures, across the language to inspire billions of people who live in the land of Uz.

Bigger Than My Fear
Posted: Sunday, May 9, 2010 by Pie Man
Have you ever had a moment in your life where you hoped to find courage, but instead found yourself gripped by fear? Not the kind of fear that rightly warns you against a stupid decision like skiing off a cliff, but a real, deep, personal fear. A fear about your future, a loved one, a situation or decision at work or at school, or a fear about your past or something you’ve done. It can leave you feeling paralyzed, helpless, and alone.
This weekend, w will be talking about fear. If there is any area where I struggle to believe that God is enough, it is in the parts of my life where I struggle with fear. Fears about all the unknowns and “what if’s”, fears about my many weaknesses, fears about what people will think of me and fears about a myriad of other things going on in my life. So, where is God in that?
Mark will take us into a story from the life of Moses, a story that will change how we understand fear and courage. In the story, God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and to the promise land. And to assure Moses that his future is in good hands, God makes him four incredible promises... We’ll look at those found in Exodus 3 and 4. |

Bigger Than My Confusion
Posted: Sunday, May 2, 2010 by Pie Man
In this message Mark will look at the wisdom of God—this big God that we serve whose wisdom is bigger than our confusion—and we’ll try to unpack what it means to love God and to love people and to serve the world? What was Jesus teaching about when He said those two great commandments?
The Israelites believed that wisdom begins here: Love God. Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. The way that you express this love for God, found in Dueteronmy 6:4-9, is you do what God says. You obey the Torah – the teachings, the commandments, the law. You put the commandments on your heart. You teach them to your children. You strap them to your arms and your head. You write them on the wall, on the doorframes, on the post. To Israel it was all about this word: Shema. As soon as a boy was able to speak, his father would teach him the Shema. In fact Deuteronomy 6:4 would have been the first passage that Jesus memorized as a very little boy.
When the Shema says that you are to love God with all your soul the Rabbis understood this to mean that you should be willing to die rather than betray God. That’s what it meant to them to say, “Love God with all your soul.”
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 |

Bigger Than My Sin

The problem with sin, especially for those of us that have been Christ-followers for a while, is that we tend to like to avoid our sin, to pretend we don’t suffer from it, to give it another name, to get defensive, to rationalize it, to craft a religion that’s about rules so that I can feel good enough that we don’t have to live in the reality of our sin. In this message Mark will suggest that perhaps living in the awareness of our sin is as important a spiritual practice as reading scripture or prayer. But it is a practice that we have lost.
We will look at a passage in Luke Chapter 18 where Jesus told a story. It’s only six verses, but it packs a wallop. It is a fascinating story because Jesus does something at the beginning of the story that He doesn’t always do.

Big God, Little God
Posted: Sunday, April 11, 2010 by Pie Man
Whatever you need, God is bigger. Whatever your weakness, God is stronger. And we are going to look today at: what is it like to live with a God who is so big? We are going to do that by looking at an individual story way back in the Old Testament, in the Book of Judges, back before Israel had kings like King David. They were living in the Promised Land, they had problems. Their problems were called Midianites. The Midianites had attacked the Promised Land and the text says they were like “swarms of locusts.” They would take over all of the crops. Things were so bad that we are told the Israelites were living in caves and holes in the ground and the Israelites had not paid any attention to God for a long time. But as we are apt to do when we are in pain, now they cried out to God for help.
“Help us, help us, help us.”
God comes to one of the most unlikely characters in all of Israel, a man named Gideon. We’ll se what happens on Sunday.

Guide
Posted: Sunday, March 21, 2010 by Pie Man
As humans, we're finite creatures and as a result we have to use finite means to guide each other's thoughts. But God is infinite, and among other things, this means God can guide your thoughts directly. He doesn't have to use sounds. He doesn't have to use symbols. He can; He doesn't have to. He has direct access to your mind. He can simply guide a thought without using any other means at all.
But now part of what this means is it's possible for God to guide a thought in my mind, but I may not know it's God doing that. Something like this is what happened to little Samuel. He didn't know. Eli helped him with this. This is what might be called the ministry of Eli…helping someone to discern when God may be speaking or guiding in their life.
In this message, Mark will dispel some of the myths that are out there when it comes to Our God guiding us as His children. He loves to guide us and that is what this week’s message is all about.

Father
Posted: Sunday, March 14, 2010 by Pie Man
One of the things Jesus Christ came to earth to do is show us what God is really like. Jesus exploded all the stereotypes about God. He showed us that God is not some impersonal force, just an energy field in the universe. God is not some angry tyrant who sets up in heaven waiting to make things miserable for people. God is not some apathetic creator who winds up the world and sets it down and then sits back and benignly watches it happen with no involvement.
In fact, Jesus described God in two words. In Matthew 6:9 He said, “This is how you should pray [in other words, this is how you should talk to God, this is how you should address the creator of the universe] Our Father in heaven.” God wants you to think of Him as a Father.
Unfortunately for many the word “father”, conjures up all kinds of painful memories. Rather than it being a happy term, it’s a sad term for some and even an angry term for others. When I say the word “father”, for some of you, it stirs up deep resentment.
In this message Mark will walk us through a biblical view of seeing God as our Father. |

A Perfect Opportunity
Posted: Sunday, February 28, 2010 by Pie Man
Sometimes we clearly see a wrong that needs to be addressed. But in our urgency to act, we let emotions, passions, and circumstances cloud our judgment. So instead of saving the day, we only make the situation worse. A hero isn’t simply somebody who does the right thing; a hero does the right thing, the right way, at the right time.

Expect the Unexpected

In a culture that resists the notion of absolutes, clarity is sometimes hard to find. But a hero is one who fights through this moral fog to provide sure answers and decisive actions. In this message, Mark will examine Jesus’ story of the Good Samaritan, who saw a clear need and responded. By doing so, he illustrated the noble characteristics of a hero.

Who Needs a Hero?
Posted: Sunday, February 14, 2010 by Pie Man
From the beginning, the Father spoke to us through Christ and said, “I can take ordinary people and make them absolute heroes.” What does a being a hero mean? Is it someone who rescues someone who’s drowning, or pulls someone from a wreck? Risking life is not just about physical life, people, risking life for most of us has more to do with discomfort and convenience, rejection, ridicule.
God takes ordinary people and says, “I teach them to live with heroic character; heroic code of conduct and heroic commitment.”

What We Can Learn from Toyota
Posted: Wednesday, February 3, 2010 by Mark Kraft
I am a fan of Toyota. I own one currently and have owned another one in the past. They make great cars.
So it hurts me to see how they are responding to what is emerging as the greatest crisis Toyota has faced. I want them to do better. I want them to sell more cars. But right now, I'm not sure they're helping themselves.
Most of us non-caver dwellers have by now heard that Toyota has halted sales on eight models (representing over 50% of its sales) and recalled millions of vehicles because of gas pedals that stick. As this piece points out, Toyota's not saying much. They haven't apologized - really. And while every defective vehicle will likely be fully repaired, somehow their handling of the situation has been less than optimal.
Here's what great companies and leaders do when facing crisis:
* The top leader are involved. Sending the VP of marketing (or associate pastor) out to do your dirty work is a failure of leadership.
* Great leaders name the problem honestly. Any "probably most of you won't die from this so it's not that serious" talk from the CEO is not helpful. Tell people it's a serious situation and tell them you are aware of the consequences.
* Top leaders take full responsibility. This is not the time to point fingers, assign blame or play they "it really isn't my fault" card. People who take responsibility inspire confidence in followers.
* Great leaders fix the problem. Honestly admitting you have a problem is different than doing everything in your power to make it right. Even if you are not sure how to fix it, publicly announcing that you will do everything you can do to find a solution is helpful.
I know that as a leader, it's hard to do these things. There's something inside all of us that wants to turtle when crisis hits. We'd love to cover up, underplay it and hope it would go away. But that undermines confidence among your followers. Doing the hard thing and owning it, assuming full responsibility and fixing the issue inspires confidence. This has been one of my key learnings over the last number of years. The more I do this, the better I (and the rest of our team) lead.
But I'm learning over time that the very best response I can have to bad news is to get on top of it and accept full responsibility.
What do you think? What are some practices you've seen in crisis that either inspire or diminish confidence? |

EMAIL FROM BOB POFF, The Director of Disaster Services for The Salvation Army, based in Haiti:
Posted: Tuesday, January 19, 2010 by Mark Kraft
Friends... please continue to prayer for the diaster relief effort ongoing in Haiti. It has been pegged as the largest natural disaster in the last 50 years. Pastor Mark
January 13th, 2010:
“Words cannot begin to describe the devastation that has taken place in Port au Prince, Haiti. I am the Director of Disaster Services for The Salvation Army in Haiti, and I am from the United States…
When the earthquake struck, I was driving down the mountain from Petionville. Our truck was being tossed to and fro like a toy, and when it stopped, I looked out the windows to see buildings "pancaking" down, like I have never witnessed before. Traffic, of course, came to a stand-still, while thousands of people poured out into the streets, crying, carrying bloody bodies, looking for anyone who could help them. We piled as many bodies into the back of our truck, and took them down the hill with us, hoping to find medical attention. All of them were older, scared, bleeding, and terrified. It took about 2 hours to go less than 1 mile. Traffic was horrible, devastation was everywhere, and suffering humanity was front and center.
When we could drive no further, we left the truck parked on the side of the street, and walked the remaining 2 miles to get back to the [Salvation] Army compound. What I found was very sad! All of the security walls were down. The Children's Home itself seems pretty intact, but our quarters, which is attached, are destroyed. Unlivable. The walls and ceiling are still standing - but so badly compromised that I wouldn't even think of trying to stay there. All of the children, and hundreds of neighbors, are sleeping in our playground area tonight. Occasionally, there is another tremor - another reminder that we are not yet finished with this calamity. And when it comes, all of the people cry out and the children are terrified.
As I am sitting outside now, with most people trying to get a little sleep, I can hear the moans and cries of the neighbors. One of our staff went to a home in the neighborhood, to try to be of assistance to the woman who lived there. But she was too late.
The scene will be repeated over and over again. Tomorrow, we will begin the process of assessing damage, learning about casualties, and preparing for the future." |
