Posted: Sunday, February 12, 2012 by Kelsey Martens
Part 2:
Sometimes the singular, number one reason that people fail to experience the incredible benefits of God’s Word is they just don’t know how. They believe it is God’s Word, but they don’t know how to use it. They get frustrated and quit. If you’ll listen with intention, Mark lays his hand exactly on the center of exactly what you need to do to get out of God’s Word everything that’s in it. All in favor? Let’s get started! |

what is the Bible good 4?
Posted: Sunday, January 29, 2012 by Kelsey Martens
What is something good for? Now that’s a big question in this day and age. Not what is it, but what is it good for and does it work? Will it help? This week, Mark shares that’s a very fair question to ask as it relates to God’s Word, and His Word is up for the question. God doesn’t shrink back in any way and go, “Oh, boy. I hope you can come up with some useful things about My Word.” Not at all! Learn how every piece of essential information for His loved ones, is in God’s Word. |

where did the Bible come from?
Posted: Sunday, January 22, 2012 by Kelsey Martens
Did you ever wonder how this Book got into our hands? Did the people writing the Bible know they were writing the Bible? Did some try to write it and fail? How did the human authors know when their writings were God’s Word? The answers to these types of questions are extremely important, because when we know the answers, our confidence in God’s Word increases big time. This message by Mark is aimed at teaching you some encouraging things about God’s Word and where it came from. |

There are a lot of people who don’t really understand what is going on in the Bible, or they have developed some excuses or reasons that they use for not really tuning in to what the Bible says. During this week’s message, Mark presents external, internal, and experiential evidence for the Bible as God’s Word as he begins to uncover and answer some of the common questions and misconceptions people have about the Bible. |

God With Us
Posted: Sunday, December 25, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Some say that He was a symbol of hope; some say a representation of God; some say a great prophet; some say a good moral teacher. But the Bible makes this incredible claim in Matthew 1:23 about the identity of this baby: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel—which means, ‘God with us.’
This morning we will reflect on those three simple words : God with us. |

An Unimaginable World
Posted: Sunday, December 18, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Imagine this year if you woke up Christmas morning to the realization that Jesus had never come to earth...
No Christmas tree. No decorations in the neighborhood. My son and daughter wouldn’t understand when I said, "Merry Christmas." "Who is Jesus?", they would ask. No mention of Christmas on TV or radio. The malls weren’t decorated at all. The Pastor's phone was disconnected.
I picked up my laptop and sat down again in my easy chair.
I went to my bookmarks and clicked on the link to my Church's website.
"Firefox can't find the server at http://www.yourchurch.com."
"What? The Church website is down? What's that all about?"
I picked up the TV remote again. I clicked to the Christian TV channel. "Avatar" was playing. I could not find any Christian programming.
I could not find anything Christian. I could not find any mention of Christmas. I could not find anything on the internet about any Church. I Googled two dozen Christian-related keywords, and never found anything.
I Googled "JESUS".
"0 search results found."
I sat back in my easy chair and cried.

Time to Untie the Mooring Lines
Posted: Sunday, November 20, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
According to the great Old Testament Passage , Micah 6:6-8, Walk humbly with your God—is the third requirement the prophet Micah states for what God expects from us. Walking with God means an awareness of his close-by presence, having a natural flow of honest conversation, even to the point of expressing anger or frustration, and always listening and acting upon God’s response. Although our tendency is often to be self- centered, perhaps arrogant and sinful, the closer and more humbly we walk with God, the more natural it is to allow God’s heart to become our heart and to let those things that break his heart break ours as well. Doing justice and showing mercy—the other of God’s expectations for us—will only be sustained when we intentionally choose to daily walk humbly with him. |

Like Lambs Among Wolves
Posted: Sunday, November 13, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Jesus called the 12 disciples to follow Him, and then sent them out to go and ‘be” the Church; next He sent out the 72 to go and “be” the Church and some 200 years later His command is still the same: Christianity is not a come and watch movement; no, it is rather a Go and “Be” movement. So where did the Church go wrong?
In this message, Mark will unpack for us a great story from the life of Jesus found in Luke chapters 9 and 10 where we will learn what He meant when w said that we are to be like “lambs amongst wolves.” |

May Cause Conflict
Posted: Sunday, October 16, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
What is the source of conflict in our relationships? We tend to blame problems on the circumstances that hurt us without taking any responsibility ourselves. Yet, are others to blame for our unhappiness or discontent? God is the source of everything we need and all we have to do is ask Him for His help. James 4:1-12 |

How’s our Cardio?
Posted: Sunday, August 7, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
A Look at our Hearts – 1 John 2 and 3
God gave us the amazing gift of a heart – our physical heart – which we, of course, can’t even control.
But God didn’t just give you a physical heart. God gave us all a spiritual heart. Our physical hearts will stop beating one day and our lives will come to an end. On the other hand, your spiritual heart – the core of the core you – goes on forever. And that’s what the writer of the book of Proverbs says, when he writes:
Above all else guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life. (Proverbs 4:23)
To keep our hearts in shape takes much effort and discipline. In this message, Mark will reveal what that looks like in the life of a follower of Christ. |

In the game show Wipeout, the contestants wipe out and fall into a lake. From there, they have to swim back and get back into the game. It is sometimes more exhausting to recover from our failures than to actually go through the challenge of life. Elijah was ready to end it all in his wipe out, but he didn’t have to return all alone, God brought him back. |

We All Wipe Out
Posted: Sunday, July 10, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Each one of us has expectations of ourselves and of others. We want our plans to work out and we know others are counting on us. But we fail or others fail us. It’s a wipeout. These wipeouts can be big and ugly or small and seemingly insignificant, yet each one is a letdown. There are many causes and reactions to these wipeouts. Elijah had a huge wipeout on the day of what should have been his greatest triumph. But God was there for Elijah and is there for us. |

We Can All Make a Difference
Posted: Sunday, June 26, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Looking at the great story from Jesus’ day when He fed the 5000, Mark will encourage us that each one of us has been called by our heavenly Father to be a difference maker in our world.
One of the most basic truths about human life is that people are made to make a difference. We are designed, wired, created for having an impact on our world. We are made to be difference makers.
And this isn’t the result of living in a modern, high tech society. This goes way, way back to the very beginning things. To the fact that we are created in the image of a creative and active God, made to reflect his image, his character, his heart for the world through the creative, dynamic, impactful life that you live. |

Clear
Posted: Sunday, June 5, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
“Proverbs 29:18 says, ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish.’ When a company, a team, a church or even an individual has no idea where they want to go or what they want to accomplish very soon they will fail. God wants people to be clear as to why they exist and how to live. He has given us a clear vision with regards to our life but if we do not incorporate this into our lives, families, church, school and work we will end up frustrated, restless and with nothing of substance to show for our efforts. As our church begins a month of defining our vision, let’s start out by being clear with what God’s vision is.” |

New Program for Upside Down (K-5) this Summer called “Jump”
Posted: Thursday, June 2, 2011 by Tweety
This summer we’ll be starting a new program called “Jump”. The program will run Sunday mornings from 10am to 11:15am (the full duration of the service) starting July 3rd and will finish August 21st. It will be an eight week program and will be huge difference in your child’s life. This program will be for Kindergarten to Grade 5. Simply drop off your kids before service starts. If you have kids in Pre-School and younger, they will still be dismissed during the service in the summer.
Each week, your child will learn about one of the journeys that Paul went on through video or live storytelling. We will focus on one main principle, or Bottom Line, each week. We’ll be asking a lot of questions about faith, God, the Bible and then exploring the answers in God’s Word. By the end of the eight weeks, we want the stories of Paul’s faith journey to have a lasting impact on your child’s life.
For your family to get the most out of this experience, please continue to ask your child at home about what they are learning at JUMP! We’ll be sending home Parent Cue Cards to help you keep the conversation going. Together, we can make a greater impact on your child’s life than either of us could do alone. |

Everybody Can Get It
Posted: Sunday, May 22, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
The story of Jesus is deep and, in many ways, incomprehensible. Yet God chose to reveal Himself through Jesus and bring us into a relationship with Himself if we only believe in a very simple message of love, grace and forgiveness.
God never asked us to do great, complicated things to earn His love. He didn’t demand payment, penitence, or endless prayers in order to receive His forgiveness. He didn’t insist on learning, memorizing and repeating deep-thinking books in order to please Him. God told us to have faith in the person and work of Jesus. The story of the person and work of Jesus is simple. It is easy to understand and to share. It is for everybody because everyone can get it.
When we “get it” and put our faith in this simple, clear story of Jesus, we are now ready to share it with everybody. |

Everybody is Important
Posted: Sunday, May 15, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Fulfillment in life is not found in autonomy, but in becoming an integral and important part of what God is doing in the world. To some extent, the North American dream can be summarized in one word: autonomy. In our society, people are on a quest to be completely independent – to be free to do what they want when they want. At first glance this may appear desirable, but it is actually an empty destination. As we take a look at 1 Corinthians 12 we'll discover that fulfillment is not found in isolation, but in becoming an integral and important part of what God is doing in the world.
What is God's purpose for you as a functioning part of the body of Christ? What integral and important part has He designed for you to play?
1 Corinthians 12 |

Everybody is Included
Posted: Sunday, May 8, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Most people don't have a problem with God. After all, plenty of people show up for church on Christmas and Easter. Unfortunately, people do have a problem with the church. For centuries Christians have made Christianity so complex that people simply write it off as irrelevant and confusing. In this session we'll see how this problem surfaced in the very early days of the church, how they dealt with it then, and how we should deal with it now.
Too many churches have been building walls instead of bridges. Too many churches have turned in their search lights for security lights. How can we keep the focus on those outside the faith?
Acts 15:1-21 |

Everybody is Invited
Posted: Sunday, May 1, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Christianity isn’t about living a good enough life to make it to heaven. A closer look reveals a much different picture of who is invited in, and why there's hope for everyone. In this message, Mark examines the invitation offered by Christian faith – not based on earning our way into God's good graces, but on the righteousness God offers to us.
All world religions emphasize earning your way into God's good graces. Do this, don't do that, and you're in. Unfortunately, many people have thought this way about Christianity—that it is about living a good life so that you'll make the cut. But a closer look reveals a much different picture of who is invited in, which means there's hope for everyone.
Romans 3:22-28 |

First Things First
Posted: Sunday, April 17, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Our priorities and self-control determine where our money goes. Most of us have the wrong priorities, thinking that we ought to spend first, pay debt and taxes next, then save and lastly, give. This is the ownership model—the idea that we start by covering our needs and wants and then give God the leftovers. Matthew 6, however, provides a different model: a stewardship mentality. Jesus speaks of first investing in God’s kingdom and then looking to Him to provide our needs. This requires rethinking our entire financial world and reversing our priorities: now giving first, saving second and spending last. With this stewardship mindset, the weight of your financial world will be lifted, and you will be able to enjoy true peace. |

No Fear
Posted: Sunday, April 10, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
What is the primary reason that we as Christians don’t give generously? Is it that we don’t believe everything belongs to God? Is it that we don’t love God? No, it is because we are afraid. We somehow think that our future will become more secure by hoarding God’s resources now. We exclude God from our finances, that is, until things go wrong. But isn’t it somewhat hypocritical to ask God to protect and bless us financially when we’ve been robbing Him? Second Corinthians 9 shows us the true path to financial security: inviting God into our finances by learning to give and to trust Him to provide. When you become a giver, you don’t ever need to worry about “running dry” because God loves to provide for those who honor Him. |

The Ownership Myth
Posted: Sunday, April 3, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Uncle Screwtape, the well-known demon of C.S. Lewis’ creation, said, “Humans are always putting up claims to ownership which sound equally funny in heaven and in hell.” That is, from an eternal perspective, the greedy word “Mine!” is not only sinful—it is downright silly. Mark will teach us this: “Whether you like it or not, you are a steward.” You may be a bad steward or a good steward, but you are certainly not an owner. Let us embrace this principle during our lifetimes, while we can still use our resources to honor God and further His work, rather than losing everything upon death. Let’s follow the example of King David, who gave to the temple fund with all his ability, saying, “Everything in heaven and earth is Yours” (1 Chronicles 29:11). |

He Walks With Me and Talks With Me
Posted: Sunday, March 13, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Quite simply, for followers of Jesus Christ prayer is the best way to communicate with God. Prayer is the vehicle for daily dialogue with the One who created us. The importance of daily communication through prayer cannot be overestimated. It is so important that it is mentioned over 250 times in Scripture.
Many of us have started and stopped many times in our effort to build a consistent prayer life and it leads to futility. In this message, Mark will teach us how the idea is not just that we learn about prayer; the idea is that we roll up our sleeves and actually practice it, actually grow in our ability to pray. We will look at Paul’s foundational prayer, which really is a core skill for anybody who is a follower of Jesus, and it's a skill we need to return to every now and then.
It's built around this short verse in the Bible - 1 Thessalonians 5:17. "Pray continually." |

Prayer Changes… You
Posted: Sunday, March 6, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
We tend to think that by praying, we change God. But when we pray God changes us. God is sovereign, powerful and wise, therefore when we connect with God through prayer, we tap into His authority, power and wisdom. This connection then works through us and changes the way we relate to God and others and changes the way we look at the situations we find ourselves in. At Waverley we are experiencing God's sovereignty, power and wisdom individually and in our corporate life. If we pray, we will experience God even more and be changed in a deeper way. |

Reconstruction
Posted: Sunday, February 27, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
The Bible tells us that renewing our mind will build our character. The truth will set us free. Therefore, it is our responsibility to counter the specific lies we believe with specific truths from God’s word. Remember: Nothing we could gain by breaking fellowship with the Father is worth having. Matthew 4:19 |

Posted: Sunday, February 20, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
God wants our character to be in alignment with the character of Jesus. Our belief systems shape our attitudes and actions. When we believe things that are not true, it negatively changes our actions. To help begin identifying the lies we believe, we should examine the excuses we use to explain our behavior; examine the areas in our life in which we tend to overreact; and examine the temptations to which we are most susceptible. Colossians 3:8-10 |

Built to Scale (pt 2)

The character that God wants to develop in us was modeled by Jesus. As we allow Christ to live through us, our character will be conformed to His. To abide in Christ we must think and act relationally, not religiously; we must focus on association, not imitation; and we must adopt the attitude that we cannot, but Christ can through us. Laying the Foundation
Posted: Sunday, January 30, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Character is the will to do what is right, as God defines right, regardless of the cost. Men and women of character are willing to recognize there is a standard of right and wrong outside of us that we need to submit ourselves to. We must be proactive and intentional in our pursuit of character and God will use our character to guide us. Proverbs 11:1-3 |

There never seems to be enough time to get it all done. How can we possibly accomplish all that we need to do with such limited time? At the end of the day, week, or month there always seem to be important things left undone. In this message, Mark takes a principle from Scripture and proposes a different approach to getting the most out of your time. |

Numbering Our Days
Posted: Sunday, January 9, 2011 by Kelsey Martens
Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (NIV) When we allow God to teach us that our days on this earth are numbered, we learn how to spend our days wisely. Whether the number of days left in our life on earth are few or many, those days will be wasted unless we know God's plan for our life and we follow His plan. |

24 Hours – 7 Days – 365 Per Year
Posted: Sunday, December 26, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
There is a very famous rule called the Pareto Principle named after an economist in Italy who basically said that in any company about eighty percent of the results will come from about twenty percent of what the company does. The same thing is true in your personal life. About eighty percent of the benefits in your life come from about twenty percent of what you do.
Vince Lombardi used to say that any game is won usually by about four or five plays. But the key to great coaching is knowing what those four or five plays are and knowing when to put them in. In other words, in a football game you’re not trying to score every single play. But you know when you’re going to put in the scoring play and you know the timing. You don’t need to know which ones make the points.
How are you spending your time? This week Mark will look at several ideas on how wasting our time on the wrong priorities will lead to severe frustration and stress.
“Live life with a due sense of responsibility, not as those who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days.” ~Eph. 5:15-16 (Ph) |

Going First

Grace always requires a death. That death could be our pride, our wants, or our expectations. If we give grace expecting anything in return, it becomes a gift with expectations instead of something freely given. Who will we extend grace to when they need it the most? Luke 2:13-14 |

Merry Christmas From Our Home to Yours
Posted: Thursday, December 23, 2010 by Mark Kraft
Dear Friends,
On behalf of our family, Nicole and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you and to thank-you for allowing us to be part of this incredible church family.
Over the last three weeks we have been learning about this amazing grace gift that God has given us the opportunity to receive – the gift of righteousness or a right standing before God. We cannot earn it nor do we deserve it, however, we each must choose to receive it.
I was amazed last Sunday that so many of you prayed the prayer that I lead us in and then how most of you filled out the gift card choosing to extend the same grace to someone in your life that was difficult to give it to. As your pastor that was so encouraging mostly in part because this action on you part has the potential to transform your life as well as the life of our church and more importantly the life of our communities.
The message of Christmas is simply this. The gift of righteousness is a no-strings attached gift. It is a grace gift offered to unrighteous people who could never get righteous enough on their own. The only way they’d only have a right standing with God is for God to give it to them. And the gift of righteousness is not like the trespass. Whereas, the trespass resulted in condemnation to all men, so the gift of righteousness results in justification for those who receive it. (Romans 5)
2010 has been like many other years – a roller coaster ride of joys and struggles, mountaintops and valleys, as well as breakthroughs and obstacles. Our Heavenly Father has been with us through all of it. As we reflect back on this year, we see our congregation growing in spiritual understanding and maturity. What a joy it has been to witness this growth and we continue to pray that more will come to know Him, as well grow in Him.
So much that happens in life is unplanned and unpredictable. We never know what is coming around the corner both good and bad. But regardless of what those twists and turns may be, what keeps us grounded and moving forward is the faithful hand of God in our lives. Whether it be moments of joy and success that we are celebrating, or experiences of hurt and defeat, it seems that God has a way of putting all things to good use. At times we are the ones who directly benefit from going through such experiences and many times, they are meant for the benefit of others. We are learning to trust that in all things God is in control. Sometimes that is easier to say then believe.
We thank God for you and the special place you have in our lives. We pray that no matter where life has taken you this past year or what circumstances you might find yourself in even now, that you too can experience the peace and assurance of the faithfulness of God.
We received a letter recently from World Vision that reminded us of the impact and significance of Christmas. Have you ever heard the expression, ‘the biggest gifts often come in the smallest packages’?
Jesus came into the world as a tiny baby, born in a humble place, amongst animals and simple shepherds. And yet he was God’s greatest gift to us. Today, the greatest gifts we can share with each other – love, caring, generosity, hospitality, grace – don’t come in fancy wrapping or big boxes. But their impact can be enormous.
God’s gift changed the world.
May we use our gifts to do likewise, this Christmas and the whole year through.
Merry Christmas from our home to yours.
With love from,
The Krafts – Mark, Nicole, Kayla and Jeremy |

Home for the Party

Like Christmas, God’s grace should result in a celebration. The gift of grace is to be celebrated as we accept it and then give it. Nothing spoils a party more than someone who won’t come home and attend while the festivities get better when everyone accepts the invititation. Are you coming to the grace party?

A Matter of Great Concern

Sometimes there is a little of Jonah in all of us. We are more concerned about our comforts, than the people around us and where they will spend eternity. God often works behind the scenes to prepare people's hearts to hear and receive the message. It's up to us to realize that God is a God of mercy and love, and often doesn't give people what we think they deserve. Jonah 3, 4. |

Having trouble managing your money?
Posted: Sunday, October 17, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
Never enough of it. Stretch it. Find more of it. Use less of it. Maximize it. Money. With it we can build a business, build a house, launch a project. With money we feed and clothe ourselves. Money keeps our country, province, city and homes running. Money can also be our reason to become stressed out, break up relationships, give up on plans and dreams or fall into personal and professional failure. The quantity of money is not the true issue in our lives. Our attitude towards money and how we handle the money we have is the key. Do you need help with money? There's an app for that! |

Wondering how to talk to God?
Posted: Sunday, October 10, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
So what is important when we pray? Is it the words that we use? What about the place or the time? As we examine the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:5-8, we are often surprised at the answers. God wants us to connect to Him in a growing, living relationship, and this requires us to take actions we may not have considered before. |

In this message, we will be challenged to set aside our preconceived notions about the Bible and just read it. |

Struggling with relationships?
Posted: Sunday, September 26, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
Most of us have experienced first-hand the power that our words can have when it comes to relationships. When we’re careless with our words we can do much damage. We can crush somebody’s spirit. We can step on somebody’s dream. We can fill somebody with resentment. We can make other people, even our own children, afraid.
On the other hand, when you say the right word at the right time, somebody who thought they were alone realizes they are not alone, they are loved. Somebody who was confused receives guidance and direction. Somebody who is ready to give up all of a sudden gets hope. The right words can sometimes give correction to a person who was about to make the biggest mistake of their lives. Words really do have the power of life or death.
In this message, Mark will look at the wisdom of Proverbs in regards to our relationships and how to build them up rather than tear them down. |

Looking for wisdom?
Posted: Sunday, September 19, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
In our day we’re overwhelmed with information, not wisdom. Biblical wisdom is the ability to make right decisions. It is very practical. It is the ability to discern in my actual life, what is the God-honoring, right course to take? And being a fool in Biblical perspective, that’s not somebody who’s not educated. A fool is primarily not a problem of the mind but a problem of the will. It’s rebellion against God. Proverbs are designed to force us to have to think about them. That’s what we will learn how to do in this message. |

Living in Hi-Def
Posted: Sunday, September 12, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
We live in an age of incredible technology when it comes to home entertainment. Long gone are the days of black and white TV with those bunny ears! Today TVs are incredibly clear and crisp in resolution with vibrant, outstanding colors. In a nutshell, TV is much "clearer" in the 21st Century.
In this kick-off message for the fall season, Mark will share our church's main purpose. We desire that each of us who calls Waverley our spiritual home sees that purpose "clearly". You will know what we mean when we say we want everybody at Waverley to be living in "Hi-Def". So what's the Main Thing? You will know the one task that, if we move toward this, will guide us in the right direction – and if we don't, no matter what else we do or what programs we start, we will have failed. This is not only true for us as a church but also in our individual lives. You will know the Main Thing for living your life well, and if you miss this you will have missed the very reason why you are on this planet in the first place.
The other aspect of this topic is that we don't get to choose what the Main Thing is. The Main Thing is the task that has been assigned to us and everyone has to decide if we are willing to take on this task or not. As a church, we have to discern together ... how is God calling us to pursue this "Life in Hi-Def"? |

Rocks
Posted: Sunday, September 5, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
Rocks generate ripples. There are rocks in our lives. Sometimes there are rocks of sin, that which goes against God’s plan. These rocks create ripples that hurt others around us and ruin our own lives. There are also rocks that come from God. These rocks generate ripples of blessing in our own lives and in the lives of those around us. Which rocks are you letting fall into the water of your own life?

A Holy Discontent
Posted: Sunday, August 29, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
Are you satisfied with where you are in life? You shouldn’t be. God places a holy discontent in our hearts that ripples out in a way that not only changes our personal lives, but also those around us. God touched Abraham in such a way that he left everything to follow God’s leading. This means a blessing for us today. In the same way, God can bless others around us through our own moving from where we are.

Fabulous Family
Posted: Sunday, August 15, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
No one wants to be alone. It is a basic need of every human being to belong and to have an identity. The most basic place in which to belong and have an identity is within the context of a family. A family should be the place where there is the most intimacy and solidarity.
Every person is separated from God and is called an enemy of God in the Bible. Yet God hates this separation. He longs to be in a relationship with each and every person. He created the way to bridge that gap and bring everyone close to Him: faith in the work and person of Jesus. Preposterous!
All those who enter into this family enter into a deep communion with God. They are known by Him and they begin to know Him, too. As our intimacy deepens with God, our relationship with others develops into something truly family and truly fabulous. |

This week we’ll learn who the Superior Spirit is and how He will change our lives, relationships and perspective. He’s preposterous yet superior! |

Lavished Love
Posted: Sunday, August 1, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
The message of love in the Bible is preposterous. Some of this message may not seem so preposterous. For instance, husbands should love their wives and vice versa. But then the Bible teaches us to love others, even strangers. Even our enemies! Preposterous!
Throughout history people have disobeyed God, offended Him, inflicted pain on each other and are destroying the very planet God lovingly furnished for us. For us, love is conditional and based on getting a good return.
Nevertheless, God lavished His love on us. He recklessly and generously heaps piles of love on us. He has gone so far as to change us from His enemies and to His children without cost to us. Preposterous!
With that much love lavished upon us, how can it not change the way we love God and others? This week’s message will show us the depth of God’s great love for us and how we can begin to love in the same preposterous way. |

Gratuitous Grace
Posted: Sunday, July 25, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
- We were dead in sin, separated from God and deserving of His punishment. This is recognized by everyone and religions try and try to erase this debt, change the course of lives and arrive at God.
- Issue: all of these methods of changing our situation are what we invent. They are predictable, boring, unreliable and unsatisfying. Ultimately, they leave us realizing we are back where we started.
- Grace is free, in fact it is gratuitous
- Our salvation given on this free grace of God
- Our works are based on this grace
- The works are giving grace to others
- Giving grace means daily and unselfishly serving, loving and caring for others whether or not they seem to deserve it
Ephesians 2:1-10 |

Esther
Posted: Sunday, July 18, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
Esther’s bravery and faith in God are a testament to the trust this young woman had in the living God. She is a lesson in God’s sovereignty over His creation. He maneuvers every aspect of life to position people, governments, and situations for His plan and purpose. We may never know what God is doing, but a time might come when we realize why we have gone through certain experiences, or met certain people, or lived in certain areas, or shopped in certain stores, or taken certain trips, until the instant when everything comes together, and we look back and see that we too were put in that moment of time, just as Esther. She was put into a harem… “…for such a time as this…” she was given to a king…”…for such a time as this…” and she was strengthened and prepared to intercede for her people…”…for such a time as this…” (Esther 4:14).
Esther is truly a reminder of God’s promise, as written in Romans 8:28: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to [His] purpose.” |

Caleb
Posted: Sunday, July 11, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
The original meaning of the name “Caleb” was “dog” in ancient Hebrew. Caleb was, in fact, like God’s “bulldog” in the Old Testament tough, persistent, eager to fight for the Lord, and sure of his victory. He was the son of Jephunneh, whose name meant “nimble” in Hebrew. Caleb provides a prophetic illustration for us of what a faithful believer should be like.
Caleb had spied out the most difficult part of the land – the area that required charging uphill in battle (which is very difficult), and fighting with huge super-soldiers (the Anakites). Yet Caleb was the one (along with Joshua) who insisted that the task was not too difficult for the Lord when others thought it was too hard. It was the other ten spies, who had visited much easier areas to conquer, who insisted that the task was impossible.
Now, at age 85, Caleb asks for perhaps the most difficult assignment in the remaining conquests of the land. Many Christians want the easy way – they want God to use them in a way that brings glory but does not require too much effort, determination, or sacrifice. Caleb was the opposite. He asked – at age 85 – for permission to conquer an area that required charging uphill again mountaintop fortresses, and fighting with soldiers much larger than him or his men. God honored Caleb’s determination and faith and gave him victory. Caleb’s name seems to be appropriate for his personality – tenacious, aggressive faith. |

Nehemiah
Posted: Sunday, July 4, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
We can learn from the life of Nehemiah valuable lessons in restoring and maintaining a relationship with God. As the people returned to the rebuilt city, the first order of business was to make certain that they understood the Law of Moses.
Nehemiah stands as a testament to faithfulness and perseverance. He lived far away from his home, yet he never gave up hope that someday he would return to it. He spent most of his life in exile in a pagan land, yet he never wavered in his faith and trust in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He was a prayer warrior, putting everything before the Lord in prayer, interceding on behalf of his people, and he was rewarded for his diligence and perseverance. Nehemiah cared so much for his people that he never gave up the hope of their restoration, not only to their homeland, but to the God that first called their forefather, Abraham, out of the same area and made a covenant with him, one which Nehemiah believed would stand forever. |

Bigger Than My Suffering
Posted: Sunday, May 16, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
The story of Job is an amazing story that goes so deeply into the human condition and this is what we are going to look at this weekend as we are learning together about a God who is bigger than our suffering.
A lot of people think the key question in Job is “Where is God when we suffer?” Where is God when we hurt? And that is a huge question. It is not the fundamental question that’s at stake in the book of Job. The key question on the upper stage, the key question really for the structure of the whole book comes in chapter 1 verse 9 when Satan says, “Does Job fear God for nothing?”.
Job could not see the upper stage. Job did not know that his faithfulness had meaning beyond his wildest dreams. Job did not know that something cosmic and eternal was at stake in his little life, in his little time on this stage in his deep suffering. Sitting on an ash heap, scraping boils off his skin with shards of broken, discarded pots—broke, sick, mocked, confused, abandoned, helpless, hopeless, alone. Job’s faithfulness and suffering was being used by God to vindicate God’s whole wild adventure in covenant love. Job’s honesty and perseverance have been used now for thousands of years across the continents, across the cultures, across the language to inspire billions of people who live in the land of Uz.

Posted: Sunday, May 9, 2010 by Kelsey Martens
Have you ever had a moment in your life where you hoped to find courage, but instead found yourself gripped by fear? Not the kind of fear that rightly warns you against a stupid decision like skiing off a cliff, but a real, deep, personal fear. A fear about your future, a loved one, a situation or decision at work or at school, or a fear about your past or something you’ve done. It can leave you feeling paralyzed, helpless, and alone.
This weekend, w will be talking about fear. If there is any area where I struggle to believe that God is enough, it is in the parts of my life where I struggle with fear. Fears about all the unknowns and “what if’s”, fears about my many weaknesses, fears about what people will think of me and fears about a myriad of other things going on in my life. So, where is God in that?
Mark will take us into a story from the life of Moses, a story that will change how we understand fear and courage. In the story, God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and to the promise land. And to assure Moses that his future is in good hands, God makes him four incredible promises... We’ll look at those found in Exodus 3 and 4. |
