Our Background & History
Waverley Fellowship Baptist Church opened the doors of it’s building, on the corner of Waverley Street and Cadboro Ave. on September 23rd, 1984. The church was established through the combined efforts of two congregations, Portage Avenue Baptist Church and Richmond West Baptist Church. Rev. T. Marsaw was the first pastor of this Waverley congregation.
A few years later, the church was able to bring on an Associate Pastor, Robin Pifer, who went on to take over the role of Senior Pastor in 1988 when Pastor Marsaw resigned. Robin and his wife Gwen served at Waverley in this capacity until 1994.
In 1995, Rev. Richard Quiring took on the role of Senior Pastor and he and his wife Esther have faithfully served in this role until June, 2008.
Mark Kraft and his wife Nicole, began their ministry at Waverley in September of 2006. Mark and Nicole had previously served at Waverley from 1998-2001 in the capacity of Associate Pastor of Family Ministries. Mark has now been the Senior Pastor since June, 2008.
Waverley started off as a small community of people and has grown to be a congregation of approximately 250. In 2002 the church embarked on a significant expansion of our existing facilities, increasing the size of the building from 11,000 sq. ft. to 19,000 sq. ft. and increasing the size of the auditorium to seat over 400 people. As a church, we have a solid foundation and have become well known in our neighborhood. The City of Winnipeg has just announced a new development, know as Waverley West, which will encompass over 3,000 acres of land and will house over 40,000 people when completed. Our church, Waverley Fellowship Baptist is located at the centre of the eastern boundary of this new development on the main north – south artery, Waverley Street. We are excited about the potential for ministry and growth that lies ahead of us as a community as we seek to be intentional about reaching out and serving the people that will be moving into our neighborhood.
